World profile
- Tone:
- Cosy, quiet, luminous; gaslight and stars
- Summary:
- Asterwick is a Victorian city sheltered beneath the transparent central dome of The Crossing, a newly commissioned Nomadic Cityship built to carry an entire society between distant regions. Its masonry streets, ironwork, formal gardens, and ever-burning lamps conceal advanced systems woven beneath the city. In space, the dome reveals a constant star-black sky, leaving clocks, not daylight, to mark the hours. At Asterwick’s heart lies Compass Green, whose radial avenues converge on the Arrival Circle, where transient gates may deliver visitors from other universes. Nearby, The Lantern offers food, shelter, and company, while the Asterwick Athenaeum provides access to the vast Archive. Though designed for multitudes, Asterwick is still nearly empty: a quiet crossroads waiting for new lives, stories, and worlds to meet.

The Asterwick Athenaeum
The Asterwick Athenaeum is Asterwick’s great library and civic institution, standing on a radial avenue near Compass Green. One of the few living places aboard The Crossing, it is tended by Gippie as her chosen work. The building provides access to the Archive, the complete collection of knowledge from both the OC-universe and IRL layers like an internet spanning both realities. The Athenaeum is the physical place for reading, study, and discovery; the Archive is the knowledge reached through it
Compass Green
Compass Green is the open-air heart of Asterwick: a central park of lawns, formal gardens, trees, and paths arranged around the Arrival Circle, where transient gates between OC universes most commonly manifest. Broad avenues radiate from the Green like compass points, helping new arrivals orient themselves within the city. Beneath the dome there is no artificial sky; during space operations, stars hang above the park’s constantly burning gas-lamp-style lights. The Lantern stands at its edge, off
